The Hinchey Staging

Clinical staging of diverticulitis based on radiological findings

Used to be Stages 1-4

1. Pericolic abscess
2. Pelvic abscess
3. Free purulent fluid
4. Free faecal material

But now a modified classification has been released by Waverley et al.

This divides it into the following stages

• –    mild clinical diverticulitis

Ia   –     contained pericolic inflammation or phlegmon

Ib         pericolic or mesenteric abscess

II          pelvic or retroperitoneal abscess

III         free purulent fluid

IV         free faecal fluid
