Quick notes - Hyperkalaemia
Hyperkalaemia
[ Resuscitation Council UK]
= or > 5.5 mmol/L
ABCDE approach
Perform 12 Lead ECG
Mild 5.5 – 5.9 mmol/L
– Correct cause
– Consider calcium resonium (15g QDS PO or 30g BD PR)
Moderate 6.0 – 6.4 mmol/L or Severe >6.5 mmol/L
– Monitor ECG in HDU
o Peaked T-waves, absent/flattened p-waves, Broad QRS, sine waves, Bradycardia, VT
§ If any of above = Calcium Chloride (10ml 10%) or Gluconate (30ml 10%) and repeat ECG after 5 mins and consider further dose
§ If not = insulin-glucose IV infusion + Salbutamol Nebs 10-20mg
– Consider Dialysis if K >6.5 mmol/L despite medical therapy
