Management of diabetic patients perioperatively

“Minor” cases

·      Should be able to eat and drink within 4 hours of procedure

·      Omit drugs prior to surgery and monitor BMs

·      If afternoon list, for Type 1 diabetics, give insulin with breakfast and then monitor BMs with 5% dextrose infusion

“Major” cases

·      Sliding scale with dextrose infusion
